It starts with you

The greatest influence on your child is you. By becoming more conscious and intentional in our parenting, we become more self-aware, allowing us to respond thoughtfully rather than react reflexively or from old patterns. We take the time to look within, considering how we want to show up as parents, and what we most want for our child. Reflecting on what we bring to parenting—our own upbringing, what we want to carry forward, and what we'd like to do differently. As parenting challenges arise, we pause and ask ourselves: Did one of my buttons just get pushed? Am I responding from stress or exhaustion? What does my child need from me right now? As we grow alongside our children, we create greater connection, confidence, and peace within our families.

Question: What part of this belongs to me?

Appreciate the Miracle

It truly is miraculous! Children come into the world with their own unique personality, incredible potential, and an inner essence or drive guiding who they are meant to be. When we truly see the child before us and trust the unfolding potential, parenting shifts from feeling like it is up to us to make our child into who they should be, to discovering and nurturing the incredible person already before us. By understanding their strengths, interests, temperament, challenges, and needs, we can guide them in ways that honor their individuality and allow their unique gifts to unfold.

Question: What is my child showing me about who they are?

Nurture Connection

The connection we create with our child is the foundation from which they thrive throughout life. It is through relationship that we support, guide, and influence our children. Their development, learning, behavior, mental health, and future relationships are all shaped by our connection. As we communicate in ways that allow our child to feel safe, heard, understood, loved and accepted, connection grows and cooperation follows. Together we create a family where everyone feels valued, supported, and loved.

Question: How can I strengthen our connection?

Guide the Whole Child

Little bodies, brains, and hearts are interconnected. Development is holistic, with each aspect supporting the whole. Children also learn best holistically - through their senses, exploration and discovery, movement, in relationship, and hands-on experiences, creating a foundation for lifelong learning. As we understand how children learn and develop, it helps us to understand why they do the things they do – or why they aren’t doing what we expect. This understanding helps to ease our frustrations and to adjust our expectations to respond with the guidance and support they truly need. In doing so, we nurture the skills, capacities, and resilience our children need to navigate life, adapt to an ever-changing world, and more fully develop their potential.

Question: What is happening developmentally—and what does my child need?

Feed the Spirit

Children are naturally full of wonder, curiosity, joy, awe, imagination, and creativity. These qualities feed the human spirit, inspiring discovery, innovation, and our search for meaning and purpose. Our inventions, works of art, scientific breakthroughs, and human progress all begin here. As we intentionally protect and nurture these qualities, children develop a strong sense of self, know their inherent worth, trust their own inner guidance, and develop the values and character that shape their lives. They continue to experience the beauty, joy, and wonder that adds to the richness of life, feeling more fully alive and fulfilled.

Question: Does this nourish and protect my child’s spirit?

Prepare with Purpose

It’s so much easier to prepare than to pick up the pieces. Preparing with purpose helps us to be proactive rather than reactive, preventing many problems before they begin, saving us time, stress, and sanity. By anticipating needs, creating supportive environments, establishing meaningful routines, and helping children know what to expect, we reduce frustration and help everyday life run more smoothly. Whether it's daily routines, transitions, challenging situations, or creating spaces that support independence and growth, a little preparation brings more calm, cooperation, and ease to family life.

Question: What preparation is needed?

Behavior is Communication

Behavior is a language of its own. All of the guiding principles come together to help us decipher what the behavior is communicating. Instead of seeing our child or the behavior as the problem, we look beneath the surface to understand what is driving it. Difficult behavior is often simply mistaken behavior communicating an unmet need. When we look at behavior through a guiding mindset, it allows us to respond with connection and guidance rather than control and punishment. Behavior becomes more than a problem to stop—it becomes an opportunity for understanding and connection as we guide our child in developing more positive ways to express themselves and navigate life’s challenges.

Question: What is this behavior telling me?

Tammy and child photo

I'm Tammy - I'm here to support you in raising happy healthy little humans -- and experience the joy of parenting along the way.

I believe parenting is a joy! But, it can also be hard! I understand the many challenges we face as parents. I’ve been there! I understand the needs and behaviors of children. I’ve been there too. I believe the difference we make for children today truly does create a better tomorrow. I believe every child is an unique and perfect individual with unlimited potential and possibility. I am dedicated to empowering parents with the principles and tools to most successfully guide their children in the unfolding of that potential and possibility. Using these principles to positively resolve the challenges and difficult behaviors we face in our daily so-important role of supporting and nurturing children.

I have worked with children and families for over 40 years. I’ve worn a variety of ‘hats’ over the years: preschool teacher, school administrator, Montessori educator, college instructor, teacher trainer, consultant, parenting educator, and parenting coach. The best hat of all, however, has been as Mom and Gammy. I’ve also been a single mom and I’m a stepmom. Parenting has truly brought my greatest joys — as well as some of my greatest challenges. Together my husband and I have four truly awesome kids, in a blended family. They’re all adults now, and I couldn’t be prouder! In fact, my daughter, son, and his wife, are part of bringing The Guiding Mindset to you.

Making a difference for children and families is my passion! I look forward to supporting YOU in fully experiencing peaceful and joyful parenting.
