Pause to see Fall through the Eyes of a Child
I have a confession.
I don’t really like this time of year. I feel a bit sad when summer is over. The days are getting shorter, I have to wear shoes and socks again, a jacket even. The sun is hiding more often, and soon it will be raining more days than not.
But what I see as the signs that summer has come to an end, children experience with wonder and awe.
Instead of anticipating the short, gray days ahead, kids notice the leaves turning bright colors of red and orange. They relish in the rustling sound as they shuffle through the leaves scattered on the ground. They may even find a few treasures in those leaves. As the rain comes, so do the puddles -- perfect for jumping in or sloshing through. And as the temperature dips, what fun to see your breath in the cold, crisp air.
Our kids experience the world with curiosity, appreciating how magical it all is.
They don’t take it for granted or see it as ordinary. They invite us to once again see the wonder we've stopped noticing. To see the world through their eyes.
We may think it is up to us to teach them, but really...
They teach us. To stop and notice. To be in the here and now. To let the magic of the changing seasons fill our spirit with wonder and awe.
This may not be my favorite time of year. But I can remember to see it through child eyes. Those red leaves really are amazing, especially when the sun hits them just right.
With you on the journey,
